Verne ships a freighter hull built entirely by human hands

The station bet that a human-certified line could still meet the transfer calendar. It cleared its first inspection with four days to spare and zero margin for the next one.

The hull is called Kestrel Provision, which is a lot of name for a freighter that will spend the rest of its life hauling water ice and reactor spares between here and Ceres Reach. It cleared final inspection this week on Bay Four, the heavy line. It is the first heavy hull Verne Station has finished since the fitters' guild voted, narrowly and loudly, to certify the line human-over-automation.

Meaning: a person struck every closing weld on the pressure spine. A person signed for it. The auto-cells sat parked and powered down, and — this being Verne — photographed extensively by both sides for the eventual argument.

The hull left the ways with four days to spare against the departure calendar.

Hold onto that number. Everyone here already is.

The vote nobody let them forget

When the guild took its stand last cycle, the objection from every quarter downwell was never about ethics. It was throughput. Verne beam-builds better than half the deep-space fleet on order, and the Orbital Exchange prices settlement bonds partly on whether the yards hit their windows. A hull that misses its transfer window doesn't wait a week. It waits until the geometry comes back around, which can be the better part of a year, and the freight it was carrying waits with it.

So the guild made a promise it hadn't kept yet: a human-certified line could still clear demand. Kestrel Provision is the first time that promise got welded to something real and pushed out the door.

"We didn't win the vote by being right," said Idris Kavanagh, the guild's line steward on Bay Four, a man who has been talking to me for years and smiling for none of them. "We won it by promising delivery. If we'd missed this window, the vote reverses itself. Nobody has to do a thing."

They didn't miss it. They also didn't clear it comfortably. That's the part nobody wants printed. I'm printing it.

Where the hands came from

The bay ran short on certified welders about a third of the way through the spine. Anyone who watched the automation come out could have told you it would. So the guild leaned on the accelerated certifications — a compressed welder-and-fitter track the Districts and the station stood up together, close cooperation being easier when Earth isn't in the room.

Forty-one crew came off that track and onto a heavy line for the first time in their working lives. The senior fitters call them the fast batch, which is not entirely a compliment. It is also not entirely not one.

"You learn the weld in the school," said Tomas Ehrenreich, thirty years on the line and openly unsentimental about all of it. "You learn the line on the line. Different thing. We caught the reworks. We caught them because we were looking."

The rework rate on the pressure spine ran higher than a fully automated run. Nobody at Verne disputes that. The counter-argument, offered by station engineering and confirmed by the inspection log, is that every rework got caught by a person who knew what they were looking at, on the bay, before the seal — instead of flagged downstream by a cell that certifies to tolerance and stops thinking there.

Whether that's worth the four days of margin the batch nearly ate is the entire question. The honest answer: this once, yes. Once.

Four days is not a business model

Four days is a triumph on the first hull. It's a heart attack on the fifth.

Verne has three more heavy hulls queued this cycle, and the fast batch doesn't get faster by being tired. The maintainer romance — the cult of the person who fixes the thing, which I generally like more than I admit in print — runs into arithmetic somewhere around the third simultaneous window.

I asked Kavanagh what happens when two heavy hulls come due in the same window and the certified crew can only be in one bay.

"We certify more people," he said.

I asked how long that takes.

He looked at the departure calendar on the bay wall, the one with Kestrel Provision now crossed off in the tired green marker they use for the ones that made it. He didn't answer that one.

The hull ships on the window. Its cargo manifest lists reactor spares for Ceres Reach, forty tonnes of them, booked against a delivery date that assumes the next hull behind it also makes its window.

It gets unloaded before anyone here knows whether it does.

Four days to spare on the first inspection and zero margin on the next one—that's not a success story, that's a confession that we're running the ships the same way the founders ran the climate: betting everything we have against catastrophic failure. Nobody signed up for New Kanem to become a margin-of-error colony.

The charter says our colony would be built on equitable labor and transparent governance. Right now someone is deciding whether to push the next hull through on zero margin to meet the schedule, and the workers won't know until they're already committed—that's not the settlement we promised ourselves.

Verne Station gets to celebrate handmade hulls while the Lunar Districts are still justifying every ounce of regolith we use to the Accord. If a human-certified line can clear inspection on our dime and our deadline, maybe Earthside should trust us to certify our own work instead of sending auditors every cycle.
