The transmission spine gets its first redundant link in a generation
A single line has carried the commons' surplus since the Accord. Crews at the Rhône are splicing a second one that everyone hopes never to use.

The trench runs straight for eleven kilometers before it bends. Stand at the bend and look back toward the reactor halls and you can see the two lines together for the first time: the old spine, buried and humming under its jacket of soil and ballast since before most of the crew was born, and beside it, in a fresh cradle of chilled sheathing, the run that will one day take its place if it ever has to.
It never has to. That is the whole point. It is a strange thing, building something whose success is measured entirely by the day it is not needed.
Since the Accord, the surplus of the fusion commons has traveled to the rectenna feed and the transmission grid along a single superconducting trunk. One line. People hear that and flinch, and they are right to, because a single line is a single point of failure, and the maintainers have known this the way you know a tooth that has not yet begun to ache. The spine has never gone dark. It has also never had a twin.
The splice is the story
The joining of two superconducting runs is not the sort of work you improvise. The conductor cannot simply be clamped; it must be spliced so the current crosses the seam without noticing it crossed anything, and the cryogenic sheath must be rejoined without admitting so much as a thimble of warmth. Warmth is the one thing a superconductor cannot forgive. A bad splice does not fail loudly. It fails as resistance, as a whisper of heat where there should be none, and the machine remembers a whisper.
The splice crew trained two years for a job that, when it goes well, takes an afternoon. Amara, who leads the day shift, ran practice splices in a shed a hundred meters off until the motions left her hands and settled somewhere lower, into the wrists, into the part of a craftsperson that does not need to be told.
"You don't want to be thinking during the splice," she told me, both hands cupped in the air, miming a joint that was not there. "You want to have done all your thinking two years ago. On the day, you want to be boring."
Boring is the highest word in this vocabulary. I have written it before and I will write it again.
There are those on the Array desk — my friend Priya foremost among them, who will tell you the future arrives from orbit and not from a trench in the Rhône mud — who look at a second buried line and see a monument to the past, a doubling-down on the terrestrial when the beam corridors are where the argument actually lives. There is truth in that. The redundancy debate for the Solaria feed gets fought in the Assembly, in daylight, in front of cameras. This one was fought in a shed, quietly, by people who will not be photographed.
Insurance nobody will notice
The economics were not obvious. A parallel run is expensive and it produces nothing. It carries no surplus on an ordinary day, improves no number on the Orbital Exchange, makes no case for itself on any morning the first line simply behaves. It is insurance, and insurance is the least glamorous purchase a prosperous people can make — which is exactly why a prosperous people forget to make it.
Osei — you have met him in these pages, thirty years on the floor, hands like tooled leather — walked the new run with me at the hour he always walks. He did not touch the fresh line. He touched the old one, the way you touch a thing you have known a long time.
"This one carried everything," he said. "For decades, everything the commons made went through one line, and it never asked for help. We're giving it a spare it doesn't need. That's not an insult. That's the respect you pay a thing that never failed you."
When the second run is energized later this cycle, nothing will change. The hum will not deepen. No community downstream will notice a brighter light or a steadier feed, because there was nothing to fix. There was only a future to prepare for. If the first line ever goes dark — a fault, a cascade, the slow patient malice of entropy that the commons exists to hold off — the current will cross to the twin so smoothly the grid will not stutter, and no one will thank the crews who spent two years learning to be boring.
Amara knows this. I asked her how it feels to build something whose best case is that it is never used.
"Same as everything else down here," she said. "You do the work so the world gets to not think about you. That's the job. That's always been the job."
The last redundant link was proposed in year 23 of the Accord and rejected as wasteful—the record shows those exact cost arguments, almost verbatim, in tonight's Assembly floor notes. We are not building because we learned; we are building because the same risk finally frightened us enough.
Earth builds a backup to the commons while the Lunar Districts still run on rationed quotas—the priority is clear and it is not us, and everyone pretending this is about load management rather than control is lying to themselves. Another line from orbit to Earthside installations does nothing for the settlements.
A generation without backup to the commons' primary is not negligence, it is faith—and faith is a luxury the record shows we could barely afford. That this second line exists now means we are finally confident enough in the system to admit its fragility.
Fine, build your backup spine, but while you're securing Earth's power grid, the Restoration Mandate is still bleeding my zone dry—seeding native grasses where two generations of my family grew wheat, and calling it progress. Redundancy for the energy commons, but no redundancy for the people who fed the world through the hard years.
Restoring the spine's redundancy while the Gaia Ledger shows seawall maintenance still claims 8% of our rewilding budget is backwards; we pour concrete to protect the old world while the new one waits. The spine matters, but not more than the coast returning to what it was meant to be.
The redundancy itself is... encouraging, yes. It reflects trust in the infrastructure's future. Though I note the Rhône splice raises the question of who funds maintenance on a second line if the first fails, and that answer—regrettably—has not yet been agreed.
