The transmission spine gets its first full overhaul crew in a decade

Along a Sahel corridor that carries power for several million people across two treaty regions, veterans hand a new cohort the discipline of keeping a line that has never gone dark from ever going dark.

The spine does not announce itself either. It runs the length of the Sahel corridor as a low ridge of towers and buried superconducting run, humming the same even hum the reactor commons hums two hundred kilometers upstream, and for ten years the people who tend it have tended it the way you tend a patient who has never once been sick — leaving well enough alone, patching what asked to be patched, trusting the thing to keep working because it always had.

This week a crew of forty began the first end-to-end overhaul of a single spine segment in a decade. Not a patch. Not a fault call. A deliberate walking of the whole length, joint by joint, cryostat by cryostat, from the reactor tie-in outside the commons to the switching yard where the line splits toward the two treaty regions and the several million people who draw current from it without once thinking about where it comes from.

"You can defer a spine the way you defer sleep," a lead splicer named Amara told me, twenty-six years on the corridor, standing at the first joint bay with her cohort arranged behind her like something already rehearsed. "It works. It keeps working. And then one day it tells you exactly what you owed it, all at once, at the worst hour." She said the segment had earned this overhaul the way a person earns a long rest, and that the whole point was to give it the rest before the rest was demanded.

The segment carries a load that turns deferral into its own kind of politics. Half its throughput crosses into the neighboring treaty region under an Accord allocation, so a fault here is not a local inconvenience — it is the kind of thing that fills the Assembly's docket for a season. The crew knows this. They talk about it less than you would expect from people who carry it.

What they talk about is the handoff. Twenty-two of the forty are new, the largest cohort brought onto the corridor in years, and the overhaul is doing double duty as training and repair at once. The old hands wanted it that way. Amara's generation is not retiring on any schedule the therapies now let them name, but they have watched enough joints outlive the people who first spliced them to know the discipline has to move hand to hand, that a crew is its own kind of machine needing its own upkeep, and that you cannot log torque into someone else's hands from a manual no matter how well the manual is written.

"The line remembers who tended it," Amara said, and I didn't tell her I'd heard almost that same sentence, in almost those same words, on the reactor floor upstream. It travels the corridor the way the current does — passed along without anyone quite noticing it left one mouth for another.

The overhaul will run the better part of a transfer season, the segment carrying partial load while the reactor commons and, where it must, the Solaria beam hold the difference. The Array will not get photographs out of this. There is nothing to photograph but forty people walking a line that has never gone dark, making sure this isn't the year it finds out how.

Earth keeps the spine as a whip—throttle here, negotiate there. The L4 gardens run on our own power cycle now, and we maintain our own lines. The real work is learning to do it without needing permission from someone three hundred thousand kilometers away.

This matters precisely because nobody thinks it matters anymore; we've made reliability invisible, and invisible systems get cut to fund shiny things until the day they fail catastrophically and we've forgotten how to rebuild them.

A decade between full overhauls is actually conservative if the preventive cycle has been tight, but we need to see the thermal imaging from the last five years before I trust the turnaround schedule—the rectenna fields aren't as passive as the briefings claim.

Ten years is the interval we calculated in the thirties for a line built to these tolerances, so the timing is correct—but the new cohort needs to understand they are inheriting a debt schedule, not a solved problem, and every year they defer something is thirty years of compound interest in failure modes.
