The Solaria Array adds a collector wing to feed the settlement freight boom

Off-world manufacturing eats power faster than the grid grew for it, and Solaria's newest wing is an answer written in watts.

Watch the readout instead of the beam — you can't see microwaves, and if you could, you'd have bigger problems. The new wing unfolded over three transfer windows, panel by panel, and when the commissioning crew brought it onto the beam this week the number climbed and held. Eleven percent over baseline. That's what Solaria's operations desk is calling it, and eleven percent of the Array's output isn't a rounding error. It's enough to run a shipyard.

That's the point of it. Roughly two-thirds of the added capacity is earmarked, by Orbital Exchange contract, for the yards at Verne Station out at L5, where most of the deep-space fleet actually gets built. Building a hull is hungry work. Every spar milled, every reactor cradle machined, every ton of Ceres metal reduced and formed draws power from somewhere, and for a decade the yards have drawn it from a beam that was never sized for a manufacturing boom.

"We were rationing the future," said Amara Okonjo, who ran the wing's commissioning from the Array's control ring. "The yards had orders they couldn't schedule because they couldn't guarantee the load. You can't lay a keel on a maybe."

Here is the beautiful part. The wing isn't a second Array — it's a graft, a collector field bolted onto the existing spine and fed into an expanded rectenna field on the ground, so the new gigawatts ride corridors that already exist. No new beam path to negotiate. No crowded orbit to route around. The engineers found the headroom in hardware they already owned, which is the kind of frugality this grid was built on. It's easy to miss because none of it is dramatic.

Now here's the ugly part, because there's always an ugly part. Eleven percent is a promise made to L5, and promises made in watts have a way of turning into leverage. The settlement bonds that financed the wing carry a maintenance clause: the yards pay their corridor share, on schedule, or the desk that opened the throttle can close it. Verne Station's operators signed with their eyes open. They remember what a lean beam did to their order book.

"Nobody at Verne wants to be the settlement that fell behind," said Idris Faye, who negotiated the yard's allocation. "We've watched what that looks like. You don't want the whole belt knowing your beam got trimmed."

The wing's remaining third stays with Earthside rectenna fields — a hedge Solaria's planners insisted on so a single off-world downturn can't strand the new capacity. Okonjo's crew will spend the next window tuning the graft, matching the wing's phase to the main array so the two feed the ground as one clean landing.

"It's already carrying," Okonjo said, watching the readout settle. "Two hundred and ten megawatts, steady, this morning. Somewhere at L5 a mill just spun up that couldn't have last month."

Abundance didn't end the fight over power. It just moved the fight into orbit, where the maintenance clause reads like a contract but works like a lever, and where the people running the mills are the last ones anyone asks.

New Kanem was chartered to prove a settlement could govern itself without Earth's constant hand on the throttle—and here we are, the Grid Commission deciding our power needs without asking us first. Another solar wing built to serve someone else's freight schedules while our charter sits in the Charter Court gathering dust.

Nobody mentions that every kilowatt Solaria beams down costs someone Earthside to maintain those rectenna fields and audit the beam corridors, and that cost gets buried in 'infrastructure overhead' while the settlements get their power dirt-cheap—follow the stewardship credits if you want to know who really pays.

The Great Plains need to know where this power surge goes and who pays for the Solaria expansion—my constituents deserve clarity before we sign off on whatever the Assembly decides next week. I've asked three times for the cost breakdown, and I keep getting bandwidth constraints as the answer.

We spent forty years restoring the wetlands here, and now the expansion schedules mean a new transmission corridor straight through what we just brought back to life—I've walked that land as my grandmother walked it, and I know the Gaia Ledger will call it a wash as long as the biomass numbers align somewhere else.
