The reactor commons trains a new generation of maintainers
Forty-odd apprentices arrive on the heavy floor as the veterans who should have made room for them decline to leave, and the commons discovers that renewal is harder to schedule than an overhaul.

The heavy floor of the reactor commons in the Cascade Basin is not a place you would think to bring the young. It is a place of settled things, the confinement rings that have not moved in decades, the coolant runs logged so many times the logs themselves have logs, the low even hum that means nothing is wrong. And yet on the morning I walked it, the floor held forty-three people who had never worked it before, standing in the loose, uncertain clusters of the newly arrived, holding torque wrenches they had not yet earned the right to trust.
It is the largest apprentice cohort the commons has enrolled since the last full overhaul, a number the training office reached for deliberately and then, I was told, quietly worried about. Forty-three is a lot of hands. It is also, when you set it against the staffing curve the commons keeps but does not publicize, not nearly enough.
The lesson is in the hands
The lead maintainer running the intake is a woman named Marta, twenty-six years on the floor, who teaches the way her own teacher taught her, which is to say almost without words. I watched her take an apprentice, a serious young man named Idris, fresh from the L4 Habitats, all theory and no fingertips, and walk him to a coupling on a secondary coolant run. She did not open a manual. She put his hand on the fitting and told him to feel for the seat, the moment where the threading stops fighting you and settles, and then to go one eighth past it and no further.
"You can read the tolerance in a spec," Marta told me later, wiping her hands on a rag that had seen a career. "You cannot read the seat. The seat is in your hand. And the only way it gets into your hand is somebody puts it there." She said this without romance, which is how you know it is true. The romance is mine. The work is hers.
That is the whole argument of this place, compressed into a coupling. The fusion is solved physics, old news, a miracle that stopped being miraculous the moment it stopped failing. What is not solved, what will never be solved because it must be re-solved in every generation, is the transmission of the noticing, the ability to hear the hum before it becomes a noise, to feel the seat before the gauge confirms it. That knowledge does not live in the Gaia Ledger or the Archive of the Recovery. It lives in Marta's hand, and it dies with her unless she puts it into Idris's.
The veterans who will not leave
Here is the difficulty the large cohort is meant to answer and cannot, by itself, solve. The commons is teaching more apprentices than it has in a generation, and it is losing almost no one at the other end.
The therapies that slow aging have reached the reactor floor like they have reached everywhere else, and they have found there a workforce singularly reluctant to step aside. Osei, thirty years on the floor when I last wrote of him and unbothered by the passage of time since, put it plainly. "Why would I go?" he asked. "The machine still needs noticing. My hands still work. Nobody has told me a reason that is about the machine and not about somebody else's turn."
He is not wrong, which is what makes it hard. Every veteran who stays is a mentor the apprentices need and a floor position the apprentices cannot advance into. The training office enrolls forty-three because it must build the bench a decade before it needs it; the veterans stay because the therapies let them, and because the commons, which distrusts change above all things, has never once been eager to replace a hand that works. Both instincts are correct. Together they make a curve that bends the wrong way, a floor thick with the very old and the very new, and a thinness in the middle where the next Martas were supposed to be.
Marta has seen the curve. She keeps a private list, she admitted, of the apprentices she thinks will last, the ones with the patience to be bored by a machine that has never failed. It is a short list. She would not give me the number.
At the end of the shift I watched Idris seat the coupling again, alone this time, and go one eighth past and stop. He looked up for confirmation and did not get it. Marta had already moved down the run. The machine remembers who tended it, and it had begun, in its low even hum, to learn his hands.
At Verne we faced the same wall five years back; the shipyard's oldest hands wouldn't move because they built everything that works. What changed is we stopped asking permission and started rotating them into teaching roles where the work itself demanded they hand over the hard calls—not because they retired, but because the next build wouldn't wait. The commons is still asking.
You're all measuring the wrong thing. Reactor maintenance knowledge degrades under the apprenticeship model because tacit expertise doesn't transfer in scheduled cohorts—it transfers in failure states when someone has to emergency-diagnose under pressure. The commons needs a different architecture, not generational guilt.
