The reactor commons bets its future on apprentices, not automation

As the founding crews reach the age they once planned to retire, the Rhône Commons opens a five-year school for hands — thirty-two entering for eighteen places on the core line.

The first thing they teach you at the Rhône Commons is how to stand still. Before anyone touches a torque wrench, before any apprentice gets within reach of the coolant manifolds that ring the reactor like the ribs of some patient animal, there's a corridor, and there's an hour, and there's the instruction to walk one at the other and notice the hum. Thirty-two people walked it this week. Eighteen of them will still be walking it in five years, on the core maintenance line, with their names in the log. The other fourteen will be told, kindly, that the machine did not choose them.

The school opened because arithmetic finally caught up with the founders. The crews that commissioned this reactor, who coaxed a bottled star into its long even hum and then refused for decades to let that hum become a noise, have reached the age at which their grandparents would have handed over the keys and gone to the coast. Longevity being what it is now, few of them are obliged to leave, and the honest truth, which none of them enjoy saying aloud, is that several of them don't intend to. But even a maintainer who doesn't age still forgets. The knowledge doesn't live in one skull. It lives in the passing of a wrench from an older hand to a younger one, and that passage, the commons has decided, can no longer be left to chance.

"We built the redundancy into the machine forty years ago," a founding technician named Amara told me, standing beside a manifold she has personally inspected more times than she can reconstruct. "We forgot to build it into ourselves."

What a slate cannot feel

The argument that runs through the school is a real one, conducted at raised voices over cooling tea in the crew hall, and it's about how much of the noticing to leave to people. The automated inspection arrays are extraordinary now. They read strain in the containment lattice at tolerances no fingertip could resolve, and they log every micro-flex without getting bored, and they never, as one instructor put it, decide the walk can wait until after lunch. One faction believes the apprentice's real education is learning to trust the array — to read its output as a pilot reads an instrument, and to intervene only when it flags.

The other faction is led, more or less, by a floor instructor named Osei, whose hands I have written about before and whose skepticism I confess I share. "The array tells you what changed," he said. "It does not tell you what it means. A number on a slate doesn't carry the memory of the last three times you saw that number and what it turned out to be." He doesn't distrust the machines. He distrusts the idea that a person who has never been wrong about a manifold can be trusted to be right about one.

I'll admit I came to the Rhône Commons expecting to write the old song of the hand against the sensor, and I'll admit the apprentices complicated it. Several of them, the ones who grew up assuming the lights simply stay on, are quicker with the diagnostic arrays than Osei will ever be. They use them not to replace the walk but to sharpen it, to know which corridor to walk first. My colleague Priya, who covers the Array and believes power comes from the sky, would say I'm slow to grant the machines their due. She wouldn't be entirely wrong. The apprentice named Ren, twenty-three and formidable, put it in a way that disarmed me: "The slate finds the change. I'm learning to find the changes it isn't looking for."

That, in the end, is what the eighteen places are for. Not to keep out automation, which is welcome here and earning its keep, but to keep alive a certain kind of judgment long enough to be inherited — the judgment that knows the difference between a reading and a warning, and knows it in the body before the slate confirms it.

The reactor didn't pause for any of this. It hummed through the entrance week at the pitch it has held since before most of the applicants were born. On the third day, a first-year, walking the corridor at her assigned hour, stopped at a pump housing the array had marked green and asked why it sounded a quarter-tone off. Amara went to look. The array hadn't been wrong, exactly. A bearing was three months from a problem it hadn't yet become. "Log it," Amara said, and the apprentice logged it. The machine remembers who tended it. It's beginning, now, to remember who will.

This is exactly what New Kanem's charter anticipates and exactly what Earth's Accord refuses to fund — developing local expertise so we're not perpetually petitioning older settlements for technical staff. If Rhône's serious about this, we should be coordinating apprenticeship with them, not begging Meridian for loans of their clinicians-turned-engineers.
