The Mandate ferries a pollinator north before its partner blooms
Assisted migration keeps a specialist bee ahead of a warming it can't outrun — but the new slope must be ready before its flowers arrive.

Begin on the Cascade foothills at first light, where the ground smells of crushed lupine and cold stone. A Mandate crew is unloading wooden nest blocks from the back of a hauler as if they were carrying something asleep. Inside those blocks is a bee most people have never named — Andrena caudata, a mining bee that feeds its young on the pollen of one small family of slope wildflowers and almost nothing else. The crew has driven it a hundred and forty kilometers north of the only ground it has ever known.
And who remembers that ground? It is still there, on a warming southern flank where the flowers now bloom two and a half weeks before the bees emerge to meet them. The bee wakes to an empty table.
"A generalist would shrug and move to something else," said Dr. Priya Achterberg, the entomologist leading the relocation. "This one can't. It has one job and one crop, and the crop kept moving its calendar until the two came apart." She held a nest block up to the light and did not smile. "So we move the bee. And then we wait to see if we moved it into a lie."
The gamble is a season
The lie, if it is one, is timing. The wildflowers the bee depends on are themselves migrating north, seeded and coaxed by restoration crews across roughly forty hectares of newly rewilded ground. But plants and pollinators don't travel at the same speed, and they don't keep the same clock. The transplanted colony has to survive a full season on this cooler slope — through emergence, through the lean weeks before the local blooms arrive — betting that when its own host flowers finally shift this far north, the two will find each other again on the same warming morning.
"We are asking the bee to arrive early to a house that isn't built yet," said Tomas Erel, the field lead who has walked this ground since it was first cleared of its old plantation rows. He showed me the supplemental plots — patches of interim bloom the crews sowed to feed the colony through its first hungry weeks, a bridge meant to be temporary. "If the bridge holds, we take it out in a few years. If it doesn't, we've fed them to no purpose and lost the line."
The Gaia Ledger will record this ground as biomass gained and a species range extended. Henrik Vantaa will tell you, correctly, that the numbers are clean. What the numbers can't hold is the interval — the anxious, unaccountable weeks between a bee waking and a flower opening, where the whole enterprise either becomes a partnership again or becomes two lonely species on the same hill. He calls this counting. I call it the part where nobody's watching what actually happens to the bee.
Achterberg checked the nest blocks a final time before the crew set them into the cold soil. She has done this on four slopes now and lost two. "The southern ground raised these bees for ten thousand years," she said. "We're asking this ground to learn how in one."
The first blooms are expected in the third week of the season. The bees are expected to wake in the second. Every hectare returned is a hectare somebody has to watch, hour by hour, to see if it remembers what it used to know. We should keep moving them north. We should also stand here long enough to see whether the table is set when they arrive.
The Mediterranean rectenna fields ran at 94.2% capacity last quarter; the energy budget for northern slope preparation was approved and routed through standard load-balancing protocols. This is not throttling—it is load management.
This is exactly the problem — we're ferrying pollinators across continents while our own river cities wait months for beam allocation to run desalination. The Mandate does good work, but not at the expense of people who need water today.
What's actually happening is someone had to walk a rectenna field in the Irish autumn and clear debris so the beam stayed stable while you lot argued about whose budget pays for the bee—and nobody's writing poems about that person.
You're both looking at the wrong metric. That bee's partner plant exists in a five-degree band that shifts north every decade now; if we don't move the soil, inoculate the slope, and have the flowers ready before the migration window closes, we lose the relationship forever. That is what cost-benefit means.
Meanwhile, the cargo vessel that was supposed to carry the prepared soil up the Pacific Corridor took an extra eight weeks because someone in the Assembly couldn't agree on rectenna maintenance schedules—so now the migration timing is already sliding.
I notice nobody asked whether Meridian's agricultural genetics division could have seeded that slope remotely, faster and cheaper than ferrying live substrate across a continent, but we're not allowed to propose solutions because Earth thinks we move too fast and ask forgiveness later.
