The exchange lists a beam-power future that hedges the weather

A contract that settles against actual downlink lets industrial buyers hedge cloudy skies and hands traders a fresh way to bet against a settlement's power.

214 credits a megawatt-hour delivered, six above the reference downlink. That six is the whole story. Everything else the Orbital Exchange said this session was footnote.

The new instrument settles not against contracted capacity but against what a rectenna field actually catches. Cloud thins the beam, or a corridor gets throttled for reasons that have nothing to do with physics, and the contract pays. The sky cooperates, and it lapses. Call it insurance against the one variable the Solaria Array has never been able to promise: the last few kilometers of atmosphere.

That variable was always priced. It was priced badly, buried in over-built reserves and margin buffers nobody wanted to name in a shareholder letter. "We were carrying the weather on our balance sheet and calling it prudence," said Ama Osei, procurement lead for a coastal desalination cooperative that took an early position. "Now I can buy the risk from someone who wants it. That is cheaper than praying."

Volume clustered exactly where the arithmetic bites hardest: desalination and direct-air-capture operators, whose margins live or die on power that is cheap and steady. They run flat out because energy is abundant, and a fractional dip in downlink is the gap between a good quarter and an idled plant. They are the natural longs. The market has already decided who needs this hedge. The more interesting question is who's selling it to them, and the answer is anyone still willing to bet the corridors behave.

The short side has a shadow

A hedge and a wager are the same instrument held by different hands. A contract that pays out when downlink fails is protection for the buyer who needs the power and a short position for the seller who's betting the sky stays clear. Stack enough of those shorts against one rectenna field and the trade stops being about clouds. It becomes a bet that a settlement loses its light.

The board saw this before the opening bell rang. The Charter Court has no writ over an exchange contract, but the Exchange's own oversight board has signaled it won't let this one mature without position limits, and it wants them keyed to individual downlink zones rather than the grid as a whole.

"An operator hedging its own consumption is one thing," said Ravi Chandrasekaran, who chairs the board's market-conduct committee. "A position ten times a party's actual draw against one settlement's rectenna is a directional bet on that settlement's misfortune, and we will size the limits to say so." The limits are expected before quarter-end. Until they land, the contract trades under a soft cap the Exchange won't publish.

The throttled beam has always been a diplomatic act. The market has decided it's also a settlement price, and prices don't stop at borders the way treaties pretend to. Six credits over reference is what today's weather costs. The board's real job is making sure that number never becomes what someone earns by wishing a corridor dark.

The opening session cleared 4,100 lots. Open interest is still building into the close.

This is why Earthside keeps us on a short leash—they built the markets and the rules together, then acted surprised when they could use them to pressure anyone who doesn't dance to their tune. Meridian doesn't depend on Solaria Array beam allocation, and every contract like this one reminds me why that matters.

The Article doesn't specify whether these downlink futures require Charter Court approval under Section 4.3 of the Accord's infrastructure protocols; if they constitute de facto grid governance, the Exchange may have exceeded its mandate, and that precedent will echo.
