The beam corridors run fine; the bill for keeping them that way is coming due
Solaria Array operators published a decade of maintenance the grid can't skip, reopening the oldest fight in orbit: who pays to keep abundance abundant.

Watch the corridors hold. You can't, of course. They're microwave, invisible, thirty-six thousand kilometers of aligned nothing. But stand in Array Operations and watch the maintenance schedule scroll and you'll see the thing nobody wants to look at. The beams work. The beams have always worked. What got published this transfer window is the price of keeping that sentence true for another decade, and it's a large number written in watts and labor hours.
Solaria's operations directorate released a ten-year upkeep plan for the geostationary beam corridors and their rectenna fields: waveguide replacement, phased-array recalibration, corridor station-keeping, the unglamorous churn of swapping out antenna mesh before it degrades instead of after. "None of this adds a gigawatt," said Ingrid Sonderby, who chairs the directorate's corridor group. "Every line item on here keeps a gigawatt we already have. That is a harder sell than it should be."
It's a harder sell because it always is. The Assembly's energy subcommittee reconvened the argument it never actually closes: established regions, who built the spine, want the drawing settlements — the Lunar Districts, the newer belt draws — to fund upkeep in proportion to what they pull. The settlements answer that they'll gladly pay for new capacity that serves them, less gladly for maintaining a spine whose oldest segments predate their own charters. Everyone wants to buy the future. Nobody wants to buy the present a second time.
Here is the beautiful part, and it's genuinely beautiful: the corridors are engineered so well that the failures are patient. A degrading waveguide doesn't drop a beam. It bleeds efficiency a fraction of a percent at a time, quietly, for years, until a realignment window arrives and there's no time to do anything but the minimum.
Here is the ugly part, because there's always an ugly part. That realignment window is measured in hours per orbit. A single corridor can only be taken off its beam and worked while the geometry permits, and the geometry does not negotiate. "People hear 'deferred maintenance' and think it means later," Sonderby said. "In this system there is no later. There is this window or the next window, and the next window is a full orbit away with the field running degraded the whole time." Slack, the thing every terrestrial utility hoards, doesn't exist up here. You fix it when the orbit lets you or you don't fix it at all.
My colleague on the fusion beat, Ken Nakashima, has spent the season reporting that the reactor commons trained fixers it then forgot to replace. He'll tell you, more than once, that the true heart of the grid is on the ground, in the hands that turn the wrenches. He's not entirely wrong, which pains me to type. The Solaria schedule is a schedule of hands as much as hardware — rotations of maintenance crews who have to be trained, launched, and paid before a single waveguide gets touched.
The subcommittee will hear funding proposals through the next window. Until it decides, the corridors run fine. Sonderby has a projection on the wall showing how long fine lasts if nobody signs. She wouldn't give me the number for print. She gave me the slope of the line. The slope was enough.
Thomas is right that use should track cost, but he's not asking the harder question—when I was your age, we built this grid assuming abundant energy meant nobody had to choose what mattered. We were wrong about that, and now the younger settlements are discovering what scarcity felt like wasn't the energy shortage at all.
We paid to keep the water out for thirty years, rebuilt twice after surge damage, and now they want us to vote on dismantling what we fought to save because the math says the climate turned. My daughter asks what that seawall meant, and I tell her it meant we stayed—until they decided we shouldn't have.
Beam maintenance is real work, same as fixing fence line or replacing irrigation pump — you pay as you use or you don't get the service. The question is why settlements that draw power like they're still rationing get to negotiate cheaper rates than the grid operators who actually built the thing.
Cost-sharing frameworks always find their way to the poor first—I've seen it in clinic supplies, in power allocation to districts with lower political weight, everywhere. The Solaria Array publishes one decade of maintenance needs and suddenly we're debating fairness on their terms, not asking why access to the grid was ever unequal in the first place.
