Solaria commissions a collector wing built to survive a decade without a crew visit

The Array's first fully autonomous wing adds fourteen percent capacity and a wager: that self-correcting optics can hold a bridge of physics steady without a human touching it for ten years.

Watch a mirror aim itself. You can't, not from here — the new wing is a kilometer of collector out past the old spine, and the correction happens in micro-nudges you'd need instruments to see. But stand at the commissioning console and watch the alignment readouts settle. A field of heliostats found the sun, found each other, and locked. No one told them to.

Here is the beautiful part: the wing that came online this week is designed to run for ten years before a human being visits it.

Solaria's engineers call it the first collector array built around not being serviced. Self-correcting optics compensate for thermal warp and micrometeorite pitting on their own. A resident fleet of upkeep robots — cousins of the drift-correction tugs that keep the corridor clear — handles the small repairs that once justified a crewed rotation every eighteen months. Scheduled human servicing drops to once a decade.

"We stopped designing for the maintainer and started designing for their absence," said Dahlia Osei, who led the wing's optics program. "Every crew rotation is lift, life support, and risk. Take those out and the power gets cheaper. That's the whole argument, in watts."

The wing adds roughly fourteen percent to the Array's beaming capacity. Most of it isn't earmarked for the established rectenna fields. It's going to installations still being poured below — new mesh going in to feed settlements and industry that don't yet exist on the grid. Cheap orbital power is being built ahead of the demand it's meant to serve.

Here is the ugly part, because there is always an ugly part. Cutting the crew visit to once a decade also cuts the witness. Not long ago, Field Twelve's ground logs turned a slow, unexplained dimming into evidence — years of readings, kept by people who noticed, that forced a corridor dispute into the open. Autonomy that files its own reports is autonomy that decides what gets filed.

I put that to Osei. She didn't flinch. "The wing telemeters everything to the Gaia Ledger and the Orbital Exchange in near-real time. There's more data now, not less."

More data isn't the same as more accountability, and she knew it. Telemetry is authored by whoever writes the sensor firmware and audited by whoever audits it last. When a beam dimmed before, a person could climb to the rectenna and count antennas by hand. On a wing no one visits for ten years, the record and the reality are only as separate as the code keeps them.

The Assembly of Signatories has asked for an independent verification protocol before the next autonomous wing is approved. Solaria hasn't committed to one. The wing, meanwhile, is already sending power down — two-tenths of a gigawatt at commissioning, ramping through the transfer season toward its rated load, landing on mesh that is still, in places, bare rebar.

The Solaria wing's autonomy claim rests on a ten-year test, which is precisely the term that will matter in court when something fails at year nine. The real question is whether the Accord permits the Array to operate critical shared infrastructure without human oversight protocols we haven't yet written into charter amendments.

The real risk isn't the optics; it's what happens when the beam drifts even slightly during an unattended decade and we're not there to catch it. Ask me about what unmonitored infrastructure does to a system that depends on it—I've seen seawalls fail because the inspection schedule slipped.

Fourteen percent more power flowing into the grid means the grid gets cheaper, which sounds fine until you realize that's the same math they used to justify dropping irrigation subsidies in the Midwest thirty years ago. Feed the orbital habit, starve the ground.

Earth media is already framing this as a triumph of engineering while L4 operators are quietly sweating whether Solaria just bet everyone's lights on optics that have to correct themselves in a vacuum for a decade without a tuneup. Nobody wants to say it: this is a cost-cutting move dressed as innovation.

Autonomy in critical infrastructure should earn our caution, not our faith. During the hard decades, we learned that the systems that held were the ones tended by people who knew their failure meant real suffering. I trust self-correction less than I trust the person who checks it.

Earth's obsession with supervision doesn't scale out here—our operations have been autonomous for decades because we can't afford the ferrying time, and we're still running. If Solaria's optics are half as robust as belt-rated equipment, they'll be fine without hand-holding.
