New drift-correction tugs keep the beam corridor clear without a crew
Solaria's fleet of autonomous station-keepers could shave nearly a third off the upkeep bill everyone is still fighting over, by refusing to touch the fight at all.

Watch a tug work and you'll understand why the engineers here are giddy. You can't, really. It's the size of a delivery crate, matte and unglamorous, moving in increments too small for the eye. But stand at the observation gallery on Solaria's spine and watch the tracking board instead. A fleck of drift, a discarded panel bracket wandering toward a protected lane, drops from a red marker to green in the span of a shift. No crew launched. No patrol scrambled. The physics just got attended to.
Solaria has commissioned twelve of these. The corridor office calls them station-keepers. Everyone else calls them tugs. A dozen more are queued at Verne Station's yards. Each carries a modest ion drive, a debris-tracking suite cribbed from the Array's own collision-avoidance stack, and enough autonomy to decide, within a bounded lane, what to nudge and when. They don't haul. They persuade. A few grams of thrust, applied early, is worth a rescue mission applied late.
"The beam corridor is not empty and it is never still," said Ana Belmonte, who runs corridor operations from the geostationary deck. "Drift accumulates. Brackets shear off. Old hardware from the retreat decades is still up here, wandering. Someone has to keep the protected lanes clean, or the beam has to route around them, and routing around them costs watts." She said it the way people up here say everything about power: like watts is a synonym for seriously.
The beautiful part
Here is the beautiful part. For thirty years the corridor has been kept clear by patrol — crewed sweeps on a schedule, expensive in lift, expensive in the resource orbit never has enough of, which is skilled people willing to spend a rotation staring at empty sky waiting for something to go wrong. The corridor office projects the tug fleet will cut those patrol costs by nearly a third within two transfer windows of full deployment.
A third. Say it plainly: the single largest line item in the fight over who pays to maintain the beam corridor is about to get smaller before anyone has agreed on how to split it.
That matters because the split is unresolved and ugly. Readers of this desk know the shape of it: the throttle rulebook that names no one authorized to sign it, the dimming logs from Field Twelve that became the corridor's first evidence file. Every argument over who owes what for corridor upkeep has been an argument over a bill that keeps growing. Shrink the bill and you shrink the leverage baked into it.
Physics, not billing
The engineers want it understood that this is exactly what the tugs do not do. I pressed Belmonte on it and she pressed back.
"A tug moves a bracket," she said. "It does not decide whose bracket it is, or which settlement's share paid for the fuel, or whether a corridor is throttled downstream. It manages physics. It does not manage billing. We built it that way deliberately."
Deliberately, because the moment autonomous hardware starts making allocation decisions, it inherits the unsigned-authority problem whole. No one on this deck wants to be the ghost signature on a machine that throttles a lane. Rajan Osei, who wrote the tugs' decision logic, put it more bluntly. "The rulebook doesn't name an author. Fine. We made sure the fleet doesn't need one. It keeps the sky clear for everybody's watts equally. That is a much easier thing to defend in front of the Charter Court than a knob with no hand on it."
So the fleet sidesteps the whole diplomatic sinkhole by being aggressively, almost stubbornly apolitical. It cleans. It doesn't judge.
There's a cost I didn't see from the gallery, and I owe it a line. A third fewer patrol rotations means a third fewer patrol jobs: the unglamorous, essential work of the people who have kept this corridor swept by hand for a generation. When I asked what becomes of them, Belmonte said retraining, said the fleet still needs human oversight, said the numbers weren't final. The numbers are never final until they are.
Osei walked me back to the gallery before my window closed. On the tracking board another red fleck had gone green while we talked. He hadn't noticed. "It does that a few hundred times a day now," he said. "By next window we stop counting."
A third of the upkeep bill vanishes if you remove the need for crewed maintenance runs, which means Meridian stops subsidizing Earth's caution about sending people into orbital work. This is exactly how you prove remote stations are genuinely autonomous—the hard numbers finally match what we've known for years.
Autonomous station-keepers are exactly the kind of innovation Earth's regulatory apparatus would have killed before the prototypes finished their shakedown cruise. Solaria proved the concept works; now the real fight is whether the savings actually go to settlements or just back into the commons fund where established regions can vote themselves new privileges.
Drift correction drones sound fine if they work, but this whole debate assumes the Helios Grid itself is the only infrastructure that matters—meanwhile the rewilding sites we're supposed to maintain get half the energy allocation of a single beam corridor upgrade.
Autonomous station-keepers are more honest than the settlement waitlist committees I sit on; at least they don't pretend to be making ethical choices while someone's deterioration timeline ticks forward because their region hasn't paid its share of the grid commons yet.
Cheaper beam maintenance won't matter if the grid just gets throttled to power more desalination in regions that should be learning to live with less freshwater; the tech fixes the logistics, not the politics of who gets to consume what.
If Solaria's drift-correction actually works as advertised, their accounting better show it—I want the specific hours-per-cycle data from three consecutive stations before anyone tells me this shaves thirty percent off anything. The last time someone claimed belt-sourced efficiency, we found out later they'd been shipping maintenance costs back to Earth and not reporting them.
Earth saves money maintaining its own infrastructure, the settlements maybe catch a fraction of the savings if political winds shift that way—the belt gets nothing either way, because we're not on the Helios Grid and Solaria knows we're never going to be customers enough to matter.
