A returning warbler finds a corridor built ahead of its arrival
Assisted migration bet a habitat corridor could be planted faster than the climate could shift a songbird's range. This season, the bird arrived early to test it.

Begin at the northern edge of the third planting, where the spruce gives way to something the maps do not yet have a name for. It is dawn, and the air smells of resin and thawed peat and, faintly, of smoke from the crews' field stoves. Somewhere in the young alder, a bird is singing a song that does not belong here yet — or did not, until the Mandate decided it should.
The bird is the boreal ribbon warbler, a palm-sized thing with a rust throat and a two-note call the crews have learned to imitate badly. For three generations its breeding range has been sliding poleward, chasing the insects that chase the warmth. The insects moved faster than the forest. The forest, being trees, could not follow. And a warbler cannot nest in ground that has not yet grown the cover it needs.
So the Restoration Mandate did what it has learned to do in the Long Repair: it moved the ground ahead of the bird.
Planting toward a moving target
The corridor runs several hundred kilometers of ground, staged in overlapping bands so each stretch matures a few years after the one behind it. The idea, in the words of Dr. Selam Ndiaye, who directs the assisted-migration program from a prefab lab at the corridor's midpoint, is "to plant a moving target — to guess where the range will be when the bird gets there, and be standing in that spot with a forest already breathing."
The Gaia Ledger tracks the corridor band by band: canopy density, insect biomass, the water table under each planting. On the Ledger, the project reads as a clean ascending line. "The numbers say we are ahead of schedule," Ndiaye said. Then she paused, because the numbers had just been contradicted by the bird itself. The Ledger draws a line. The bird does not read the Ledger.
The relocated population — some four hundred pairs, moved as eggs and fledglings from a range collapsing at its southern edge — returned this season nearly three weeks early. The southernmost bands, planted first and furthest along, were ready. The middle bands were not. The insects there had not yet emerged in the numbers a nesting pair needs.
"We built a corridor for the climate we projected," said Tomas Rell, a field ecologist who has walked the middle bands since the first saplings went in. "The bird is living in the climate that actually arrived. That is a gap of about eighteen days, and eighteen days is a clutch."
What the crews are watching
The crews have answered the way maintainers always do: improvising against a schedule that was never theirs to set. They are seeding early-emerging insects into the middle bands. They are hauling in host plants by the crate. In two stretches they are simply letting the birds crowd into the mature southern bands and living with the density risk that comes with it.
No one can say yet whether the pairs that nested early will fledge young, or whether the corridor has only offered them a beautiful place to fail. The count at season's end, band by band, will say what the Ledger cannot.
Ama stood in the fourth band at midday, where the alder was chest-high and a male was singing from the tallest of it, staking a territory in a forest younger than he was. And who remembers what stood here before? Nothing did. This ground was cutover and scrub a decade ago, planted for a bird that had never seen it, in the hope that it might one day call the place home.
"He does not know we built it for him," Rell said, watching the warbler. "He just thinks he found it. That is the whole idea. If we did this right, it should feel to him like luck."
The corridor works because someone planted it between the fields people actually farm—that's not restoration science, that's neighborhood gardening at scale. The Mandate gets the credit, but the warblers survive because smallholders kept the hedgerows alive when the incentives said to plow everything flat.
Bet you a year's docking fees this gets cited as proof the Accord's coordination works, when what actually happened is a single bird arrived to a single corridor and everyone's going to count it as consensus anyway.
One arrival season is not a test—it's an anecdote. The warbler's range has been shifting for decades, the corridor exists for one year, and we are measuring success in individual birds rather than the ecosystem's capacity to sustain five generations. This is still humans timing nature to human schedules.
