A remote valley builds its own rectenna instead of waiting on the corridor
A forty-megawatt pilot in the Tessin Highlands pulls power straight from a narrow beam slot and quietly asks whether the great corridors are the only way down

The field is barely a field. Where the great rectenna commons sprawl across dozens of square kilometers, the installation the Solaria Array commissioned above the Tessin Highlands this week is a mesh you could walk in ten minutes. One hexagon of antennas, terraced into a south-facing slope, feeding a valley of about nine thousand people and a run of greenhouses.
Here is the beautiful part: it works. At noon the readout held steady at thirty-eight megawatts, peaking near forty-one, delivered from a dedicated beam slot no wider than the corridor allocations argue over by the fraction. The valley drew none of it from the main transmission spine — the same contested spine Ken Nakashima's reactor sources keep insisting is the true heart of the grid.
"We used to be at the end of a very long extension cord," said Marta Vogel, who runs the valley's utility cooperative. "Now we have our own tap on the sky."
The engineering isn't new physics. It's old physics, made small. A tight beam. A compact aperture. A receiver sized to a load instead of a region. What's new is the willingness to point the Array at one valley instead of a continent.
"The temptation with orbital solar has always been to think big," said Idris Farkash, the Solaria commissioning lead on site. "Bigger beam, bigger field, bigger bill. This is the opposite bet. Match the slot to the need and you skip the whole conversation about corridor shares."
That conversation is the point. Isolated settlements — highland valleys, ice-locked outposts, anywhere the spine reaches only expensively — currently buy into maintenance shares for infrastructure they touch at the far end. The Assembly of Signatories has spent three sessions arguing over who funds the corridors, and the throttle rulebook that went live this season still has a blank where its enforcement authority should be. A valley with its own rectenna opts out of that argument entirely.
Solaria puts the pilot's cost at roughly four times the per-megawatt figure of a commons-scale field, before the beam slot itself is priced. Beam slots are not free. Each dedicated slot is aperture time the Array can't sell elsewhere, so the economics turn on how many narrow beams the collectors can hold open at once. Farkash's team says the answer is "more than we assumed" — in watts, that's a serious claim.
What the tour didn't dwell on is who keeps the mesh clear of ice and the tracking calibrated once the commissioning crew rotates home. Vogel's cooperative has trained four technicians. "Four," she repeated, when I asked, as if daring me to call it enough.
If the design scales, the map of who depends on the corridors — and who pays to hold them up — starts to loosen at the edges. Vogel isn't waiting to find out. Her cooperative has already applied for a second slot.
I remember when the corridors went live — we thought they were permanent, too. But Charlotte's right that redundancy matters; I'd want to know what that rectenna does when a storm swings through. That said, the fact that a valley felt it had to build its own tells us the Accord's energy allocation isn't holding its end of the bargain.
A forty-megawatt rectenna in a valley sounds clever until it fails in weather or drifts slightly off-beam. The corridor system was built redundant for reasons — because mountains move, targets shift, and when power dies in winter, people freeze. These youngsters confuse novelty with improvement.
Charter Court will have to rule whether a regional rectenna counts as 'material alteration of energy infrastructure' under Article 9 of the Accord. Tessin's filing is already on the docket; vote count is genuinely unclear. The fun part is whether Signatories quarantine beam slots or let them fragment entirely.
Earth's been squeezing the belt on lift capacity for years, so when someone figures out how to skip the corridor rent, they get hammered for it — watch the Charter Court tie this up for a decade. If the Tessin pilot works, everyone builds one, and suddenly the grid operators have no leverage. That's the real conversation nobody's having.
A forty-megawatt ground receiver is precision work, and if they've threaded a beam through that topography without corridor infrastructure, the engineering is sound. What's telling is that they *had* to go independent — the corridor committee has been throttling highland settlements for three years. The real story isn't the rectenna. It's that the grid is no longer trusted.
