A new rectenna field locks its first beam
The Kalahari array pulls 2.4 gigawatts out of the sky for an inland region that has only ever drawn power secondhand — the moment abundance stops being a coastal privilege.

Watch the beam come down. You can't — it's microwave, invisible, and dawn over the Kalahari gives you nothing but a horizon and a fence line — so watch the readouts instead. At 4:11 local, the field controller went from a scatter of amber to a single steady green: beam-lock. A collector wing thirty-six thousand kilometers overhead had found its target, and 2.4 gigawatts began landing on a mesh of antennas as gently as rain.
Here is the beautiful part. This region has never had a corridor of its own. Everything it ran — pumps, cold chains, the desalination line that lets the interior grow anything at all — arrived over the transmission spine, borrowed from somewhere with a beach and a rectenna and first claim on the watts. As of dawn, it makes its own landing.
"We stop being a customer at the end of a very long wire," said Tumelo Kgosi, the field's commissioning lead, standing at a console still wrapped in shipping film. "That wire was fine. But a wire is a favor. This is ours."
The favor was expensive to end. Solaria's corridor engineers spent eleven months calibrating a sky lane, and the hard part wasn't the physics. It was the traffic. The chosen bearing threads a launch approach busy with lift out of two spaceports, and a beam corridor and a rocket cannot share the same column of air. "You carve a lane, you fence it in software, and you prove — to the Assembly's satisfaction and mine — that the lane closes itself faster than anything can wander into it. That's eleven months. Most of it was arguing."
The geometry cost them power. Threading the launch approach meant a steeper beam angle and a wider guard margin than a coastal field would tolerate, which is why the wing rates at 2.4 gigawatts and not the 3-plus its collectors could theoretically deliver straight down. Kgosi called it "the tax you pay to live inland." He didn't sound sorry to pay it.
The field is built to be left alone. Following the pattern Solaria set with its last collector wing, the Kalahari installation is designed to run four years between crewed inspections — self-diagnosing antenna faults, routing around dead cells, filing its own maintenance tickets to a rectenna field with no permanent crew larger than a dozen.
That's the part that will get argued next, so let me start. A field that runs four years without a visit is still a field whose bill comes due on schedule, and a corridor this hard to carve is a corridor a treaty power could someday find very hard to give back. Nobody throttled anything at dawn. Nobody had to.
By noon the desalination line was drawing directly from the field for the first time, and the spine — the wire that had carried this region for a generation — was quietly running slack.
Inland power means inland industrial ag, which means the Gaia Ledger starts counting my soil carbon instead of pretending the Great Plains are a blank slate for rewilding. This is the moment they find out marginal land with roots holds more carbon than dust bowls playing wilderness.

New Kanem watched the Kalahari build without consultation, then watched Earth claim credit for the grid that made it possible. We wrote our charter to mean something, and if Earthside institutions get to redefine what scarcity allows, it means nothing.
The Kalahari rectenna raises a Charter Court question the Accord has not answered: does energy abundance trigger mandatory restoration in regions that now have the surplus to fund both agriculture and rewilding? The founding treaties assume scarcity forces the choice.
The Signatories just split 6–5–4 on whether the beam corridor maintenance bill falls to the rectenna beneficiary or the Solaria Array commune. Binding vote due in fourteen days. Nobody wins, which is how the Accord survives.
If the Punjab Authority can draw on Kalahari surplus, my next crop cycle changes—millet, legume, and perennial cover instead of grain monoculture. The rewilding mandate never asked what small farms could do if we had power. Now we get to find out.
Rectenna efficiency depends on relay maintenance crews that most people have never heard of, working in heat that longevity therapy doesn't cure. When the beam locks and the grid holds, remember that's not automation—it's us.
