A first-generation reactor is being retired into the Archive
After sixty years of unbroken power, one of the commons' earliest fusion modules will become an exhibit: its keepers cannot agree whether to leave it breathing.

The module they call Old Three does not look like the beginning of anything. It sits at the low end of the commons, past the newer halls with their clean lines, a squat gray vessel wrapped in the accreted plumbing of six decades — patches upon patches, a coolant loop rerouted so many times that no single drawing describes it anymore, only the people who walked it. In a few weeks the Terran Restoration Mandate and the Archive of the Recovery will take formal custody of it, and Old Three, which has fed the Helios Grid without a single unplanned outage since the hard decades, will stop being a reactor and start being a memory.
Sixty years is a long time to hold a small star in a bottle. The physics was never the hard part; the physics was settled before Old Three was poured. The hard part was the noticing, day over day, the walking of the same corridor at the same hour, and the module outlived nearly everyone who first tended it. "You don't retire a machine like this," a shift lead named Halvorsen told me, standing under the vessel with her hand flat against a cold flange as though taking a pulse. "You retire alongside it. My mother logged this same loop. The machine remembers her torque values better than I remember her voice."
What to keep, and how
The decommissioning itself is unglamorous and exact. The fuel is long since gone, the tritium inventory accounted for down to figures the Gaia Ledger will publish. The vessel itself is cooled, safed, and rendered — in the Archive's careful phrase — narratively legible, and that last requirement is where the quarrel began.
The Archive's curators want the control room frozen as-found: the last logbook open to its last entry, the mismatched chairs where crews sat, the coffee ring on the console that Halvorsen swears predates her tenure. Freeze it, and a visitor two generations from now can stand where the maintainers stood and understand, without being told, that the recovery was kept alive by ordinary people refusing to be bored.
The maintainers want something else. A faction on the floor — led, loudly, by a panel technician named Osei who I have quoted before and will quote again — argues the control room should be left operable, its displays live, its diagnostics still running against a simulated load, so that the room continues to do the thing it was built to do rather than merely depict it.
"A dead room is a photograph," Osei said. "You want them to feel the hum. You freeze it, you've got a museum of buttons. Leave it running and the hum tells them what nobody's plaque ever will — that this was never about the fusion. It was about the watch."
The curators counter that a room kept operable is a room that must be maintained, and a civilization that decided, deliberately, to stop running Old Three cannot in the same breath commit crews to running its ghost. There is a discipline in letting go, they argue, that the cult of the maintainer resists on principle. On that point I confess a private sympathy for Osei that I have learned, over the years, to distrust in myself.

What neither faction disputes is what the module was for. Old Three delivered first grid power to three inland retreat towns — Corran Ford, Halewick, and Ndele Crossing — settlements raised during the coastal retreat, when the seawalls were still going up and the maps were still being redrawn. Those towns are now arguing, in their own assembly halls, about whether to be unbuilt: whether the land beneath them, drawn during the emergency, should return to the Restoration Mandate's rewilding rolls now that the emergency is a chapter in the Archive.
There is a symmetry in it that no one on the floor missed. The reactor that made the retreat livable is being retired in the same season the retreat itself is being reconsidered. A field engineer from Halewick came out to see Old Three before it goes quiet. She stood in the control room a long while, said little, and signed the visitors' log in the old-fashioned way, by hand.
The decision on the control room has not been made. The Assembly of Signatories will not touch it; this is too small for them and too large for anyone else. So it falls, as these things do, to the crew and the curators, in a room off the floor, over drawings that no longer match the machine.
"Whatever they decide," Halvorsen said, "the loop stays. Somebody's mother is in that pipe."
BenedictHouse is right that the data matters, but the data only matters if someone younger actually gets trained to understand it — and right now the longest-tenured staff are still here because they can be, because the Consortium can afford to keep them. We're not learning from that reactor; we're just looking at it.
Sixty years of uninterrupted service is exactly what we should be studying — not retiring the reactor, but documenting every maintenance protocol, every efficiency curve, every failure that didn't happen. The Archive should preserve the object *and* its operational data; anything less is nostalgia masquerading as stewardship.
The question isn't whether to leave it breathing — it's whether Earthside can afford the standby load when that reactor slot could be cleared for decommissioning costs that actually scale. Someone has to run the numbers without sentiment attached.
Let it breathe. The moment Earthside decides a reactor is too historic to operate is the moment they stop seeing infrastructure as something that *works* and start treating it like a memorial — which is fine for them, not fine for the rest of us who need reliable power.
