A drained peatland is reflooded, and the ledger finally believes it
The Northern Fen Basin logged a verified carbon sink after one wet season, and for once, without borrowing a neighbor's numbers.

The claim is that the Northern Fen Basin is a net carbon sink. The figure agrees. This is rarer than it should be.
The basin was drained four generations ago for grazing that never paid. Peat exposed to air does one thing: it oxidizes, releasing what it spent ten thousand years storing. The Terran Restoration Mandate approved reflooding in the last transfer cycle. Engineers blocked the old drainage cuts. They let the water table climb. Then they waited. Waiting is the part no one wants to fund.
The Gaia Ledger now records Northern Fen at a verified drawdown of 5.8 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year, measured across the wet season and the shoulder months on either side. That is the finding. I went to see whether it was also true.
The audit
I walked the flux towers with Sofia Renner, who has audited fen basins for eleven years and does not round up. Fourteen towers sit on the basin, measuring gas exchange directly, station by station. The water table is logged at nineteen wells. The satellite passes agree with the towers. The towers agree with the wells. When three independent instruments agree, the number stops being a wish and becomes a finding.
What is absent here is the trick that has embarrassed the Ledger elsewhere. No boundary was shared with an adjacent basin. No credit was borrowed across a line and counted twice. Northern Fen was logged as a closed accounting unit, its perimeter surveyed, its inflows and outflows metered.
"We fenced the arithmetic before we fenced the water," Renner said. "You cannot verify a sink whose edges leak into someone else's book."
I asked her the question I ask everyone. Who signed, and when did they rotate out. The answer, for once, is clean: the signing auditors remain on the basin for the next two cycles. Praise did not arrive as accountability departed. It arrived while the people who wrote it were still standing in the bog.
Per hectare, the peat wins
The basin's projected storage is the number that will travel. Peat, saturated and undisturbed, holds carbon at a density that woody forest cannot match. Restoration Mandate models put Northern Fen at roughly four times the per-hectare drawdown of the pine replanting that had been proposed for the same ground before the reflooding won approval.
That comparison will be used to argue for more fens and fewer plantations. Use it carefully. A model is not a wet season. Four times the drawdown assumes the water stays up, and water tables in a warming interior do not stay up on a spreadsheet's say-so. The figure I trust is the one the towers already logged, not the one the projection promises.
Sofia Renner put it plainly before I left. "Come back next dry year. If the number holds when the rain does not, you will have something worth printing."

The ledger believing itself is almost as important as the peatland actually working—but Earth still had to call in a verifier like L4's numbers weren't good enough on their own, didn't it? We've been tracking our gardens' carbon for thirty years without external audits; maybe the real lesson is that restoration works when it's local and ungoverned.
One wet season doesn't make a sink; Meridian's been growing food in sealed habitats for two decades with consistent input-output accounting and nobody treats that like news when it happens on schedule. Earthside rediscovers competence once a generation and acts surprised.
One peatland verified and suddenly every claim in the Gaia Ledger becomes ammunition for the freeze on belt exploration—resource scarcity is real and the Accord uses carbon accounting as cover to keep the outer settlements dependent on Earthside lift contracts.
I walked that basin in my grandmother's time when it was logging camps and ash; the money that pays to flood it comes from people who never saw it drain, so they treat the wet as a neat engineering story instead of a wound closing. Restoration isn't vindication—it's barely half of apology.
The Gaia Ledger was designed precisely for this—a northern bog that people abandoned sixty years ago now credible enough to clear its own carbon debt in a season. That's the recovery working, which is also why everyone wants to move the goalposts for what counts next.
Good for the fen, genuinely, but meanwhile the Lunar water extraction margins are frozen because Earth's worried about deep-aquifer depletion, and we're told it's for the planet's sake while they're pumping carbon sinks at industrial scale with no production bonus. The Accord rewards luck and landmass.
