The section they came to replace does not look like anything. I asked Amara whether it bothered her, doing work that succeeds precisely by being invisible. She was already logging the last of the torque figures, the numbers that will sit in the record until someone decides, decades on, that it's time to look again.
"The machine remembers," she said. "That's enough."
