A butterfly corridor is redrawn to outrun the cooling
In the Cordillera zone, Mandate crews must relocate species faster than the climate resettles. This season they could carry only eighteen of sixty.

Begin at the tree line, where the air has a bruised-green smell: crushed lupine, cold stone, and under it the resin of firs planted here by hand two decades ago, already too low for the season they were meant for. The frost comes later now, gentler too, and the mountain is cooling out of its long fever. That should be cause for celebration. Here it is also a problem, because a butterfly does not read the Gaia Ledger. Left alone, it will chase the temperature it knows straight off the top of the world, unless someone carries it to where the cold is going.
The butterfly in question is a montane fritillary the crews call the ash-wing, though the field records give it a longer name. A generation ago, when the heat was still climbing, restoration teams walked its host plants and its eggs uphill, ridge by ridge, to keep it inside the band of cold it needs. Now the Long Repair has turned the dial back. The cold band is sliding down and north again, and the ash-wing is stranded near a summit with nowhere left to climb.
"We spent twenty years teaching this species to go up," said Dr. Rosalind Achebe, who runs the Cordillera assisted-migration cell for the Terran Restoration Mandate. She knelt over a nursery flat of violet host plants, checking the roots. "Now we have to teach it to come down and go north at the same time. The window for that is not a century. It's about a decade, before the climate settles into something the old corridor can't serve."
Eighteen of sixty
The redrawn corridor is a ribbon of managed ground down the eastern slope, then along it: a chain of relocation plots seeded with the soils and host plants the ash-wing needs, tucked into shade it was promised. Building it means choosing passengers. This season the cell nominated sixty candidate species for the move — the ash-wing, its two host plants, a parasitic wasp that keeps it honest, a chain of pollinators and soil fungi holding the whole arrangement upright. Eighteen cleared triage.
The triage isn't sentiment. It's arithmetic, and the arithmetic belongs to the Gaia Ledger. Each relocation has to justify itself against the basin's biomass and carbon targets. A species anchoring a functioning food web scores passage; one that merely charms us doesn't. The ash-wing survived the cut because three other species were judged to depend on it. Forty-two candidates did not survive it.
"You are asking me which forty-two we leave on the mountain," Achebe said, and did not look up from the roots. "I can give you the number. I cannot give you the feeling of it."
My colleague Henrik Vantaa would tell you the number is the honest part — that a mountain means exactly what its measured biomass says it means and nothing more, and that the rest is my sentimentality. I have stood on returned ground and argued with him for a living. But watching a triage sheet decide which insects get a future, I'll grant him this much: the Ledger at least drags the choice into daylight, where it can be fought over. What it can't tell you is what a mountain remembers. And who remembers it.
There are people on this slope who remember too. The lower relocation plots run through pasture a co-op has grazed since the retreat years, and the Mandate needs that ground for the corridor's warm end. "They came with maps and a schedule," said Tomas Reyes, whose family holds a grazing lease three switchbacks down. "They are very kind. They are also going to fence my best meadow for a butterfly." He wasn't against it, exactly. He asked what the fritillary was worth on the Ledger, and when I told him it had scored high, he laughed and said at least somebody's grandmother was getting paid.
The first release goes out with the next cold snap. Crews will carry flats of violet and vials of overwintering larvae down the new ribbon by hand, the way the mountain forest went up by hand a season ago, betting they can move a small cold-loving thing faster than a warming world settles into its peace. The forty-two left behind will stay on the summit for now, inside a warming that is really a cooling that is really, if you stand close enough, an eviction.
"We are not saving everything," Achebe said, sealing a flat for transport. "We are saving what still holds the rest up. Ask me in ten years if that was the same thing."
Eighteen of sixty. That number should be screaming from every feed on Earth, not buried in a Mandate dispatch. The climate is moving faster than institutional capacity, which means the Mandate is functionally choosing which species matter — and the Cordillera decision is being made by committees that have never set foot in those valleys.
You want to move sixty species across a climate gradient faster than the gradient itself moves? That's an engineering problem wearing a conservation suit. It needs better transport, more secure waypoint habitats, maybe modular holding vessels. Someone at Verne could build that, but nobody's asking and nobody's budgeting for it.
Everyone wants to talk about the butterfly. Nobody wants to talk about the transfer crews who have to move them with their hands and specialized carriers, or the field stations that need power in fifteen places at once to keep the relocation sites habitable. That infrastructure doesn't maintain itself, and it costs.
The real failure is that Earth's Mandate committees move like sediment while the climate doesn't wait for consensus. If the researchers on the ground had autonomy to experiment with rapid-cycle relocation protocols without six layers of charter review, you'd have better than eighteen.
Eighteen this season, fewer next season if the warming accelerates — at some point you stop asking whether you can save everything and start asking what survives if you don't try. That's not defeatism, it's the math we should have faced in the Cordillera twenty years ago.
