A beam corridor gets rerouted around a crowded orbit

Solaria's engineers moved a two-gigawatt path to dodge a thickening band of traffic, and the re-survey reopened the oldest question on the grid: who pays for the room the beam needs.

A beam corridor is not a road. You can't paint a line on vacuum. What you can do — what Solaria's survey crews did this transfer window — is redraw the volume of sky the microwave is allowed to occupy, then defend it kilometer by kilometer against everything that has moved in since.

The corridor feeds a rectenna field on the eastern coast at just over two gigawatts. It ran the same geometry for eleven years. Then the traffic changed. A cluster of freight staging orbits and two new habitat modules crowded into a band the powered path used to cross empty, and Solaria's corridor office ordered the reroute rather than gamble on a clearance it could no longer guarantee.

"We do not thread a beam through a place where something might be," said Anouk Serval, who runs corridor integrity for the Array. "We move the beam. The beam is the thing that bends, because everything else is carrying people or carrying cargo, and the beam is carrying neither — it is just carrying the grid."

Here is the beautiful part. Rerouting two gigawatts sounds violent and it isn't — it's almost gentle. The transmitter's phased array re-steers, the receiving field re-tunes, and the delivered power barely flickers. The hard work happened earlier, in the re-survey: remapping the exclusion volume, then padding it hard. The old guard margin ran a few hundred meters. The new one runs kilometers, a deliberate over-provision so that no charted orbit, and no plausible drift off one, ever crosses the powered path.

"Margin is not caution, it is arithmetic," Serval said. "You price the collision you refuse to have, and you buy that much empty space."

Empty space has a bill. The reroute lengthened the corridor slightly and forced a re-coordination with the traffic authorities at the affected Lagrange approaches — surveys, station-keeping adjustments on Solaria's relay optics, a fresh registration with the Orbital Exchange, which clears the corridor's easement like any other piece of contested volume. And so the old argument showed up on schedule, the way it always does when the sky gets a little more crowded.

The treaty powers on the eastern coast draw the power. The Array carries the upkeep. The settlements whose traffic forced the reroute pay, right now, nothing toward the margin their presence created. Delegates to the Assembly of Signatories have already pulled the corridor into the long-stalled fight over who funds the shared spine — the beam corridors, the reactor commons, the transmission lines — and who just rides it.

"Every new module up here narrows the sky a little," said Teo Ravindra of the Exchange's freight desk. "The beam gives way every time. Somebody is buying that room. Right now it is not the people crowding it."

Solaria's office says the rerouted corridor holds stable through the next four transfer windows, when the traffic band is projected to thicken again. The re-survey is already on the calendar. Nobody has answered Ravindra's question. Nobody at the Assembly seems in a hurry to.

The beam corridor question is the same one that's been governing longevity access for a generation: who bears the cost of infrastructure that some use more than others? Move a two-gigawatt path and suddenly everyone wants the bill split by principle instead of physics. The answer is always that someone's queue gets longer.

New Kanem's charter says energy costs are pooled by population, not by congestion—that's the founding compact. If Solaria can just reroute and pass the bill to whoever's in the way, then every other utility gets to rewrite the terms whenever physics gets inconvenient, and there's no charter, just whoever moves the beam fastest.

ViktorM's not wrong, but the beam exists because we built it, and we maintain it, and the metal and cable keeping Verne Station on bearing gets more expensive every time the routing changes—Solaria's survey cost us three weeks of dock time and nobody budgeted for that. Quality work means the corners aren't free.
